Black Chia Seeds

How to Eat Chia:

It’s easy to include chia in your diet. Chia is one of very few grain-like seeds that can be eaten completely in its natural state – no grinding, no cooking and no processing.Sprinkle onto your muesli or cereals, into your salads or smoothies, or soak in liquid to form a chia pudding. Chia can even be used as an egg replacement; when allowed to ‘gel’ in a little water chia becomes sticky and binding, perfect for vegan baking.

Nutrition Information:

Adding a tablespoon of chia to your daily diet delivers 3g of omega-3 ALA and 6g of dietary fibre. Chia also a fantastic source of vegetarian protein, containing all nine essential amino acids.

Difference Between Black and White Chia:

Chia seeds can be either black or white, but never brown. There is no nutritional difference between black and white chia, however brown chia is immature and should not be eaten.

In book "Superfoods for Life: Chia," Lauri Boone says that choice of seed color is only important aesthetically. Some foods may look better when prepared with light, rather than dark, chia seeds.

Chia seeds are both black and white in color. The nutrition is the same in both "colors" of seeds. If you plant only the white seeds you will produce white chia or planting black will only produce black. The biggest difference is the growing area and the climate differences.

If you compare the two seeds (analses completed by an ISO 9000 certified laboratory) the average for white chia seeds are 16.5% protein, 32.6% lipids and for the black chia seeds 16.9% protein, 32.4%lipids.

Why Should I Buy This Product?

Chia seeds are one of the world’s oldest sources of nutrition, documented to have been eaten by the ancient Aztecs and Mayans as early as 3500 BC.

Derived from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, chia seeds offer the highest combined plant source of omega-3, fibre and protein, alongside a range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Chia offers essential wholefood nutrition that is often lacking in the modern diet.

Dietary Uses:

Selecting chia based on color is a personal choice based on whether you want to see the seed in your food.

Costing around $5 per 100 gm at the time of publication, chia seeds are relatively tasteless, so you can sprinkle them raw on foods as a nutrition booster without altering the taste.

You can also add chia to breakfast cereal, yogurt, salads and soups. When mixed with water, the seeds form a thick gel that can be blended into smoothies or used as a binder in bread and muffin recipes. While some slight differences in the protein content and omega-3 fatty acid composition exist between the black and white chia seeds, they do not significantly alter the nutritional value.

Health Benefits:

Chia helps make you feel fuller longer because the seeds absorb 10 times their weight in water, forming a bulky gel. The excess water weight in the gel keeps your body hydrated. The omega-3 fatty acids contained in chia seeds are vital fats that protect against inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and heart disease.

Chia seeds can help you lose weight because they reduce your food cravings by preventing excess food from being absorbed into your digestive system.

Chia also reduces the rate at which your body converts carbohydrates into simple sugars, controlling blood sugar, which can be a great benefit if you are diabetic.
